List of Humanists/Rationalists/Social Reformers of India
1. In the strict sense, Presently, Humanists do not associate themselves with any religious denomination. However, in the past, religion had been a default identity and some people who were otherwise humanists did not dissociate themselves from religion (like the present day Humanists do) and instead tried their bit to "reform" religions. Here is a list of such "reformers". These people have placed emphasis on the development of people and the society and not on serving the "religious" purposes.
Basavanna (1106-1167) Kannada Saint, Philosopher & Religious Reformer.
Ram Mohan Roy (1774-1833) Founder of Brahma Sabha (origin of Brahmo Samaj) known for his social contributions in abolition of Sati, promotion of modern education and restoration of women's rights.
Narayana Guru (1855-1928) Reformist Saint-Guru from Kerala
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) Leader of Indian Freedom Movement, A Great Humanist in Principles.
